The Summit will provide an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues, says MEA
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia for the 16th BRICS Summit next week, marking his second visit to the country this year. The Summit, being hosted by President Vladimir Putin under the Chairmanship of Russia, will be held in Kazan on October 22-23, 2024.

The Summit, themed "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security," will provide an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday (October 18, 2024).

“The Summit will offer a valuable opportunity to assess the progress of initiatives launched by BRICS and to identify potential areas for future collaboration,” the MEA stated.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS member countries and invited leaders in Kazan, Russia.

Prime Minister Modi also visited Russia in July this year. He met President Putin in Moscow on July 9, 2024 for wide-ranging talks aimed at providing a fresh momentum to the India-Russia bilateral partnership. During their discussions as part of the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, the two leaders discussed ways to diversify bilateral cooperation across sectors like trade and commerce, security, technology and innovation.

Attending the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 26, 2024, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underlined its significance for multipolarity and global diversity. During the meeting, he also discussed achieving SDG targets, addressing debt, promoting fair trade, and overcoming poverty and reiterated the need for coordinated global efforts to tackle these pressing challenges.

The BRICS group of major emerging economies - comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa - decided to take in Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates as new members during the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa on August 24, 2023.

Welcoming the new members, Prime Minister Modi said BRICS would become stronger as an organization with the new members joining. The group's collective efforts would also get new strength with this development, he added. According to Prime Minister Modi, the expansion and modernization of BRICS was a signal that all institutions in the world need to adapt to the changing times. The expansion of BRICS can set an example for the reform of other global institutions that came up in the 20th century, he said, in an apparent reference to the United Nations.

The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, and China met for the first time in St. Petersburg, Russia, on the margins of the G8 Outreach Summit in July 2006. In September 2006, the group was formalised as BRIC during the 1st BRIC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which met on the sidelines of the General Debate of the UN Assembly in New York City.

The 1st BRIC summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia on June 16, 2009.

BRIC group was renamed as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) after South Africa was accepted as a full member at the BRIC Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York in September 2010. South Africa attended the 3rd BRICS Summit in Sanya, China on April 14, 2011.

BRICS is looked upon as an important grouping bringing together the major emerging economies from the world, comprising over 40% of the world population, having 24% of the world GDP and over 16% share in the world trade. BRICS countries have been the main engines of global economic growth over the years.
