India is one of the first countries to respond with assistance
In response to the severe floods and landslides that recently struck Nepal, the Government of India has mobilised emergency relief materials to support the affected families. The consignment was officially handed over to the authorities in Nepal on Monday (October 7, 2024).

The emergency aid package, consisting of 4.2 tonnes of humanitarian supplies, includes tarpaulins, sleeping bags, blankets, chlorine tablets, and water bottles. These materials were transported from India to Nepalgunj as an immediate response to the crisis. The Indian government has also confirmed that additional essential hygiene items, medicines, and further relief materials are being arranged for delivery soon.

This humanitarian initiative highlights India’s ongoing commitment as a reliable and swift responder during crises in neighboring countries.

India’s Ongoing Commitment as a Regional First Responder
India has a history of acting as a first responder in the wake of natural disasters in its neighboring countries. In the aftermath of the devastating 2015 earthquake in Nepal, India launched Operation Maitri, its largest disaster relief mission abroad. The operation provided immediate and extensive aid, reinforcing India’s reputation as a dependable ally in Nepal’s times of need.

In November 2023, India also provided vital relief materials following the Jajarkot earthquake, showcasing its long-standing support and partnership with Nepal in disaster management efforts. These actions demonstrate India’s consistent approach to offering assistance promptly and effectively, ensuring the safety and well-being of its neighbors.

The floods and landslides that swept through the central and eastern parts of Nepal in the last week of September have caused significant damage. The natural disaster, triggered by record-high rainfall, led to widespread devastation, claiming lives, destroying properties, and displacing thousands of families. As of October 7, 2024, the death toll has risen to 246, with 18 individuals still missing. Additionally, 178 people sustained injuries due to the rain-induced incidents across various regions.

The severe impact of these natural disasters has necessitated international and regional assistance, with India being one of the first countries to respond.

Additional Support from Indian Entities
In addition to governmental aid, several Indian organizations have contributed to Nepal’s disaster relief efforts. The Oriental Insurance Company Ltd, LIC Nepal Ltd, and Nepal SBI Bank Ltd have made contributions to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. Public sector hydropower development companies SJVN Ltd and NHPC Ltd have also contributed. This financial assistance aims to support the ongoing relief and rehabilitation operations and assist the victims in rebuilding their lives.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu shared a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, acknowledging the contributions from these entities and reinforcing India's commitment to aid Nepal during these challenging times.

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Government of India for the loss of lives and property caused by the floods and landslides. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to assisting Nepal, emphasizing the solidarity between the two nations in disaster response and relief efforts.

In a message conveyed to Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sincere condolences and reiterated India’s readiness to extend all possible assistance in the relief and reconstruction efforts. Ambassador Srivastava conveyed, "I express our deepest sympathies for the recent floods that have resulted in significant loss of lives and damage. As Prime Minister Modi stated, India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal at this difficult time. We are prepared to offer any assistance required by the Government of Nepal for its relief and reconstruction efforts."

Following the heavy rains in late September, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) issued warnings of potential heavy rainfall across various regions, including Bagmati and Koshi. The authority urged the public to exercise caution, especially when traveling, to prevent further casualties and ensure public safety.

The Armed Police Force (APF) of Nepal has reported that the death toll from the disaster stands at 246, with 29 individuals still unaccounted for. The APF continues its search and rescue operations in the affected areas, working alongside other agencies to provide relief and aid to those in need.

India’s proactive response to Nepal’s recent crisis underscores its dedication to maintaining strong bilateral ties and fostering regional stability. As the relief operations progress, the Indian government and various Indian organizations remain committed to supporting Nepal’s efforts in managing and recovering from the disaster.

This collaborative approach highlights the importance of regional cooperation in building resilience against natural disasters. The continued support from India serves as a testament to its steadfast partnership with Nepal, ensuring that both countries can face and overcome challenges together in the spirit of mutual cooperation and solidarity.
