In a diplomatic initiative aimed at deepening India's ties with Latin America and the Caribbean, Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita will embark on a nine-day official tour from September 30 to October 8, 2024. His visit will span four countries: Mexico, Grenada, Barbados, and Antigua and Barbuda.
The visit underscores the deepening of the relationship between India and Latin America and the Caribbean. MoS Margherita’s itinerary begins in Mexico from September 30 to October 2, 2024, where he will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of Claudia Sheinbaum, the newly elected President of Mexico. Mexico’s growing economic influence and its leadership in the region make it an essential partner for India as both countries seek to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, and technology.
Mexico and India have shared diplomatic relations for over 70 years, and MoS Margherita’s presence at the inauguration will highlight India’s proactive approach to supporting democratic transitions and leadership changes in its partner nations. His visit is expected to foster deeper collaboration in areas such as renewable energy, technology, and cultural exchanges, particularly given the shared interests of both nations in global forums such as the United Nations.
Following his stay in Mexico, Margherita will head to Grenada from October 2 to 4, 2024. This visit holds special significance as it marks the first ministerial-level visit to the country since 2018, signaling renewed attention from India toward Grenada and the broader Caribbean region. During his visit, the MoS is expected to engage in high-level discussions with Grenada’s Foreign Minister and other political leaders, focusing on issues of mutual interest, including trade, climate change, and education.
Grenada, a small island nation in the Eastern Caribbean, has increasingly become a focal point for India’s diplomatic efforts in the region, particularly within the framework of South-South cooperation. India has consistently offered support through development partnerships and technical assistance, and the upcoming discussions are expected to further explore areas for collaboration in healthcare, education, and renewable energy projects.
From October 4 to 6, 2024, MoS Margherita will visit Barbados, where he will engage with key political and industry leaders. Barbados has emerged as a regional leader in advocating for small island developing states (SIDS) on the international stage, especially concerning climate resilience and sustainability. India and Barbados share a commitment to addressing the challenges posed by climate change, and this visit is expected to explore avenues for closer cooperation in renewable energy, disaster management, and technology transfer.
Moreover, the visit to Barbados will include interactions with the Indian diaspora, a community that has historically contributed to strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. The final leg of MoS Margherita’s tour will take him to Antigua and Barbuda from October 6 to 8, 2024. The MoS will hold bilateral meetings with senior government officials, exploring opportunities for collaboration in tourism, education, and information technology. Antigua and Barbuda has long been a proponent of deeper relations with India, given its growing focus on education and sustainable development initiatives.
As part of his broader agenda, the MoS will engage with business leaders, members of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) alumni network, and members of the Indian diaspora across these nations. These interactions will serve as key platforms for furthering bilateral partnerships, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, and cultural cooperation.
