PM Modi reaffirms India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Interim Government has assured that it would prioritise the protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minority groups in Bangladesh,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after he received a telephone call from Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus on Friday (August 16, 2024).
During the call, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh.
"Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB. Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He assured protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh," Prime Minister Modi posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
The assurance from Chief Advisor Yunus comes after reports of attacks on members of the Hindu community living in Bangladesh in the days following Sheikh Hasina's resignation as Prime Minister on August 5, 2024, in the wake of widespread anti-quota protests by students and the accompanying violent clashes. The violence left hundreds of people dead.
According to India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), during the call, Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities in Bangladesh. "Prof. Yunus, in turn, assured that the Interim Government would prioritise protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minority groups in Bangladesh," the MEA stated.
"Prime Minister reaffirmed India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He emphasised India's commitment to supporting the people of Bangladesh through various development initiatives," the MEA said.
Prime Minister Modi had also expressed concern about the safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh during his Independence Day address from Delhi's Red Fort on Wednesday (August 15, 2024).
"I understand the concerns regarding recent events in Bangladesh, especially given our proximity as a neighboring country. I hope that the situation there soon returns to normalcy," Prime Minister Modi said. He explained that the primary concern of India's140 crore citizens was to ensure the safety of Hindus, the minorities in Bangladesh, adding that India has always desired that our neighboring countries pursue a path of contentment and peace.
"Our commitment to peace is deeply rooted in our culture. In the days to come, our positive thoughts will continue to accompany Bangladesh on its development journey because we are the people dedicated to the welfare of humanity," Prime Minister Modi stated.
Earlier, conveying his best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities on August 8, 2024, Prime Minister Modi had expressed hope for an early return to normalcy and sought the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities.
