Trade has emerged as an important component of India's relations with countries in the region
Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita will embark on a five-nation visit to the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago from August 15, 2024. This is in line with India’s push to further strengthen bilateral ties with countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

According to the schedule released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday (August 13, 2024), MoS Margherita will be in the Dominican Republic on August 15-16 to attend the formal swearing-in-ceremony of President-elect Luis Abinader. He will also interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

In Guatemala (17-19 August, 2024), he will call on President Cesar Bernardo Arevalo de Leon. He will have a bilateral meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez, Minister of Foreign Affairs to discuss bilateral ties. During his visit, MoS Margherita will meet members of the Chamber of Industry of Guatemala, Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial and Financial Associations (CACIF). He will also visit Antigua, the UNESCO Heritage city.

In El Salvador on August 19, MoS Margherita will call on President Nayib Bukele. He will have a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill T in addition to holding a series of other ministerial interactions and engagements. He will also interact with Indian Diaspora.

In Panama from Augsut 20-22, 2024, the MoS External Affairs will have delegation-level talks with Foreign Minister Javier Martinez and will call on President Jose Raul Mulino. He will visit the University of Panama to pay floral tributes at the Bust of Mahatma Gandhi and plant a sapling as a symbolic gesture. He will also visit Panama Canal and Panama Pacifico Free Trade/ Industrial Zone facilities.

The last leg of the visit will take him to Trinidad and Tobago on August 23-24, 2024 where MoS Margherita will have a meeting with Minister for Foreign & CARICOM Affairs Amery Browne. He will call on Prime Minister Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. He will also interact with members of the Indian community.

"Visit of MoS to these five countries reaffirms India’s commitment to further strengthen our ties with the countries in Latin America and Caribbean region. It provides an opportunity to explore and advance our partnership in newer areas of mutual interest," the MEA pointed out.

Trade has emerged as an important component of India's relations with countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region. 

According to the Department of Commerce, India’s total trade with the Latin American and Caribbean region, comprising 43 countries, stood at USD 35.73 billion with exports worth USD 14.50 billion and imports worth USD 21.23 billion during 2023-24.

Latin America possesses vast reserves of natural resources such as metal ores, minerals, and agricultural products while sectors like engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, information technology, textiles and various other industries are India’s strength.
