President Droupadi Murmu has completed a productive visit to Fiji in keeping with India’s continuing engagement and partnership with the Pacific Island Countries.
 
Attending a series of meetings and events on Tuesday (August 6, 2024), she reiterated India’s commitment to climate justice for Fiji along with other ocean states. President Murmu also used the opportunity to highlight the importance India places on its development partnership with Fiji. While in Suva, she met President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
 
A highlight of the first visit by an Indian head of state to the archipelago nation was the conferment of Fiji’s highest civilian honour on President Murmu.
 
An important outcome of the visit was the formal allocation of the project site for the 100-bedded Super Speciality Hospital to be established in Suva as a Government of India grant in aid projects. The project was announced by Prime Minister Modi ji at the 3rd FIPIC Summit in 2023.
 
“We are confident that this critical infrastructure for public good, will bring a paradigm change in the delivery of quality and affordable health care, not just to Fiji, but to the entire Pacific region. Another important outcome of this visit was the allocation of land by the Fijian Government for the construction of our High Commission premises and the Indian Cultural Centre in Suva,” said Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar at a special media briefing.
 
Shared Values & Democratic Principles
President Murmu addressed the Fijian Parliament, emphasizing the shared values and democratic principles that bind India and Fiji.
 
"As India emerges strongly on the global stage, we stand ready to partner with Fiji, according to your priorities, to build a stronger, more resilient, and more prosperous nation. Let us come together to unlock the full potential in our partnership for the mutual benefit of people of both our beloved countries," she stated.
 
She recalled the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Fiji in 2014, where he highlighted the fundamental values that unite the two nations. She reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s development goals and fostering closer collaboration in various sectors.
 
Commitment to Climate Justice: Addressing the pressing issue of climate change, President Murmu assured the Fijian Parliament of India's unwavering support for climate justice. "As a powerful voice of the Global South, India will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Fiji and other ocean states for climate justice," she affirmed. She praised Fiji's significant contributions to global efforts in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.
 
Strengthening Development Partnerships: In a meeting with Prime Minister Rabuka, the leaders discussed wide-ranging issues, including enhancing development partnerships and building climate resilience. They agreed to build upon the historic ties and further strengthen the partnership between India and Fiji. President Murmu highlighted India's focus on the development of clean and renewable energy, reaffirming the commitment to support Fiji's sustainable growth.
 
President Murmu Conferred with Fiji's Highest Civilian Honour
In a historic moment marking the first-ever visit by an Indian head of state to the archipelago nation of Fiji, President Murmu was conferred with Fiji's highest civilian honour, the 'Companion of the Order of Fiji,' by President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere. The prestigious award ceremony took place at the State House, symbolizing the deep and enduring ties between India and Fiji.
 
President Murmu expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the honour, describing it as a reflection of the robust and friendly relations between the two nations. "This award is a testament to the strong bond of friendship that exists between India and Fiji," President Murmu remarked during the ceremony.
 
Upon her arrival in Suva, President Murmu received a ceremonial welcome at the airport from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. A traditional Fijian welcome ceremony was organized, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Fiji. Following this, President Murmu visited the State House, where she was warmly received by President Katonivere. The two leaders engaged in discussions aimed at deepening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation.
 
Engagement with the Indian Diaspora
President Murmu also took the opportunity to engage with the vibrant Indian community in Fiji. She addressed an enthusiastic gathering, expressing her admiration for the resilience and determination of the 'Girmitiya' indentured labourers who arrived in Fiji 145 years ago. She emphasized the importance of the Indian diaspora as vital partners in India's journey of progress and development.
 
"We see our overseas Indian community across the world as important partners and stakeholders in the journey of building the India of our dreams," President Murmu noted.
 
During her visit, President Murmu paid tribute to the shared historical and cultural connections between India and Fiji. She visited the National War Memorial in Suva to honour the memory of martyred soldiers and laid floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School.
 
President Murmu's visit follows the historic visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Fiji, where he was also conferred with the highest civilian honour of Fiji in recognition of his global leadership. Prime Minister Modi dedicated the honour to the people of India and the generations of the Fiji-Indian community who have played a crucial role in fostering the enduring bond between the two countries.
 
President Murmu’s three-nation visit, which also includes stops in New Zealand and Timor-Leste, underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its relations with Pacific Island countries.
